At Coryum we have made a collection of men’s leather belts with nickel-free and lead-free buckles for anyone who reacts to these metals. An estimated twenty million people in Italy live with this allergy, which shows up as dermatitis or skin rashes. We know how hard it is to find a handmade leather belt that is genuinely hypoallergenic, so we set out to make belts that are sustainable from start to finish.
Sustainable, handcrafted work
If you suffer from allergies and dermatitis, a nickel-free buckle is essential but not enough on its own. Let me explain. Wearing a belt with a nickel-free buckle but a chrome-tanned strap can still trigger a skin reaction, because chrome tanning uses chemical substances, chrome among them, that can be toxic to people and the environment and may cause dermatitis and allergies. Around eighty percent of all leather is tanned this way. Is there an alternative? There is. As with every Coryum belt, we use only vegetable-tanned leather, where the tanning is carried out with natural substances such as the tannins found in grapes, chestnut and mimosa. Leather tanned with this centuries-old method grows more beautiful and more distinctive over time, so you end up with a belt that is fully sustainable, hypoallergenic and genuinely good-looking.
